Profiling a Generation Gold Participant

Our "Generation Gold" program attracts today's best mining graduates, and turns them into tomorrow's great mining leaders.

Meet Brad Howe, a 24-year-old junior mining engineer. Through Generation Gold, Brad is enjoying the career opportunity of a lifetime, as right-hand man to the Chief Operating Officer at Kinross.

Born and raised in Grimsby - a small town on the shores of Lake Ontario - Brad left high school and entered the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Applied Science-Department of Mining Engineering. In his fourth year he completed a co-op term with one of the largest and best-known gold mining companies in the world, and was offered a full-time position in Australia.

Brad turned it down.

The better offer?
An opportunity to join Kinross, as a Generation Gold recruit.

"I couldn't pass up the chance to work alongside Tim Baker, Kinross' COO. As his right-hand guy, I'm getting hands-on experience like I've never had before-travelling the world and really adding value to the organization. I never thought that at 24, I'd have this kind of opportunity. It's been one of the smartest decisions I've made."

Brad's job is to crunch global data from Kinross mines, analyze trends, prepare reports, and provide technical support for continuous improvement projects. "Working at the Kinross headquarters alongside a C-suite executive has opened my eyes to how complex the business of mining really is," says Brad. "From Finance, to Exploration, to Tech Services, it takes a lot of teamwork and expertise to drive a gold mining company day-to-day."

From the perspective of Tim Baker, COO at Kinross, "Generation Gold gives us access to some of the best and brightest mining graduates in the world. Given the labour shortage we're facing in this industry, it's critical that we tap into this pool of talent, and help these young people develop into our next generation of great leaders."
